For avid readers of my blogs (who am I kidding 🙈), you will know that I dashed off last week to attend a random awards ceremony as part of my approach of embracing random elements.

Well, blog fans (aka mum and dad) you’ll be happy to know that it was an amazing night. Not only was it incredible to be back at a large black tie function (don’t you worry full covid protocols were in operation) but my hosts for the evening, CluePoints, won an amazing award for their medical research.

As you can imagine, the evening went crazy at that point and I’m not ashamed to say that I may have indulged a little too much in the celebrations (4am finish anyone 🙄).

Now, back in the day these debaucherous nights would have been fine as you could hide at work but when you run your own small business, going wild one evening has serious repercussions.

In hindsight, organising an 8am networking call the next day was a little foolish (in my defence I didn’t know I was going to the awards ceremony when I arranged it) and so it was little surprise when I actually missed the 8am call 😬.

Fortunately no major loss there as I rang the same person later that day and was 100% honest about the reason I’d missed the call. This time he was OK with it but it really was a silly thing to do. What if it had been a key client or a make-or-break proposal, I definitely would have been kicking myself.

Even though that was fine, certainly Shiageto Consulting did not have its finest day on Friday as my hangover meant everything I did was much slower and less effective (oh the irony of running a consulting firm based on improving effectiveness 🤦🏻‍♂️). I also had to decline another Christmas party on the Friday night as I didn’t necessarily feel tip-top.

So, what are my lessons learnt?

  1. Random elements can be lots of fun
  2. Winning an award definitely can contribute to a hangover
  3. Going wild is not always the best option when you run a small business
  4. It’s Christmas time so a little bit of fun is no bad thing, don’t beat myself up too much
  5. You can write a blog about anything 😉

Right, short and sweet one today folks. Join me on the next one and hope your Xmas celebrations are also in full swing.
